Emily Aguilar-Pine is a research assistant in the lab of Dr. Brett Baker in the department of Integrative Biology at the University of Texas at Austin. Her research in Dr. Baker’s lab revolves around metagenomic data generation and analysis of bacteria and archaea living in marine sediments. Her main goal in this work is to understand how these integral microbial communities are shaped by and interact with fluctuating environmental pressures. As she continues in her research career, she aims to more closely investigate the role of deep archaeal lineages in maintenance of microbial community functions. Emily received her bachelor’s degree in biology along the evolution, ecology and behavior track from the University of Texas at Austin. The upcoming cruise focused on the search for Asgards will be her third and longest research cruise. She is excited to work alongside so many incredible scientists and looks forward to potential new findings concerning Asgards and their symbiotic interactions.
