Diego Urteaga is a marine biologist from Argentina with a deep fascination for life on the ocean floor. He works as an Assistant Researcher with the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET). He is based at the Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales “Bernardino Rivadavia” (MACN) in Buenos Aires. He also shares his passion for science as a professor in the Biology program at Favaloro University.
Diego’s research focuses on polyplacophoran mollusks—also known as chitons—from both shallow waters and the deep sea, with an emphasis on species from the southwestern Atlantic. His work spans from studying fossil records to describing living specimens, helping to piece together the evolutionary history of this lesser-known group of marine invertebrates.
At MACN, he serves as Associate Curator of the National Invertebrate Collection (MACN-In). He remains active in the Argentine Association of Malacology (ASAM), where he currently holds the position of Secretary and has also served as Editor of its bulletin.
Since 2009, Diego has taken part in several oceanographic cruises. This expedition aboard R/V Falkor (too) is his first with Schmidt Ocean Institute—and a new chapter in his continued efforts to uncover the mysteries of deep-sea biodiversity.
