Cyran Benjamin is an MPhil candidate in Environmental Science at The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with specializations in Marine Biology and Zoology from The University of the West Indies. Her current research focuses on the spatial and temporal variation of marine phytoplankton communities in wetland, nearshore, and offshore marine environments of Trinidad and Tobago. Cyran’s research aims to contribute to a greater understanding of phytoplankton diversity and distribution in the southern Caribbean region, where cohesive baseline data remain limited. Her research interests include plankton ecology, marine biodiversity, aquatic ecosystems, and environmental monitoring. As part of her MPhil research, Cyran will conduct field sampling and laboratory analyses to establish phytoplankton composition, abundance, and diversity across different marine environments and seasonal conditions. Through this research, she hopes to contribute valuable baseline ecological data to support future marine research, environmental monitoring, and conservation efforts in Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean region.
