Bárbara De Feo is a Master’s degree student and research assistant at the Centro Universitario Regional del Este (CURE–Universidad de la República, Uruguay).
Her research focuses on plastic and microplastic pollution in the environment, including terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems, and their interactions with biota across different regions of Uruguay and Antarctica. Since 2020, she has participated in several summer Antarctic campaigns, conducting both field and laboratory work related to monitoring plastic pollution and invertebrates biodiversity. She is also involved in monitoring plastics pollution on beaches and the marine system within the framework of the Red de Investigación de Estresores Marinos–Costeros en Latinoamérica y el Caribe (REMARCO), and has carried out technical work on microplastic pollution in riverine environments.
Bárbara holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from Universidad de la República and is currently pursuing her Master’s, supported by a scholarship from the Agencia Nacional de Investigación e Innovación (ANII), focusing on the presence and transport of microplastics in meltwater streams in Antarctica.
The Falkor (too) will be her first research cruise, and she is excited to contribute to the scientific efforts on board by supporting the research teams, and explore the extent of plastic pollution in the ocean.
