Dr. Anna Metaxas, a Killam Professor at Dalhousie University, is an expert in marine seafloor ecology and ecological connectivity of shallow and deep-sea ecosystems. She has done research on kelp beds and tropical coral reefs as well as hydrothermal vents, submarine canyons and deep-water coral forests. She is currently involved in many national and international initiatives that have as an ultimate goal the translation of scientific outcomes into information that is relevant to policy. She co-leads the Biodiversity Conservation Task Force of the Deep Ocean Stewardship Initiative, is a coordinating lead author in Biodiversity Inclusive Spatial Planning and Connectivity assessment and was a lead author on the Nexus assessment on the Interlinkages among Biodiversity, Water, Food and Health of IPBES. She has advised processes by the International Seabed Authority and the Convention on Biological Diversity and has extensive experience advising the Canadian government on the design and monitoring of Marine Protected Areas.
