Anela is a biological oceanographer and a deep-sea ecologist. She is an Associate Professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at University of California San Diego. Her research investigates deep ocean food web connections, both between organisms and across habitats. Anela is interested in food web biogeochemistry and the processes that drive feeding and the movement of species and assemblages in the deep pelagic ocean. Her lab’s research combines field observations and collections with diet, morphology, stable isotopes, and organic pollutants.
Anela received her M.S. and Ph.D. in Oceanography from the University of Hawaii and she was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. She is the recipient of a National Science Foundation CAREER award, an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Research Fellowship, a Maxwell/Hanrahan Field Biology Award, and a L’Oréal USA For Women in Science Fellowship.
