Ana Martínez is a marine biologist specialized in phytoplankton. She has worked as a researcher at the National Directorate of Aquatic Resources since 1996 in the analysis of phytoplankton composition and its relationship with oceanographic characteristics. She is currently in charge of the national monitoring of red tides along the Uruguayan Atlantic coast.

Ana has extensive experience working on board in oceanographic campaigns in the Uruguayan shelf and the Argentine-Uruguayan common fishing zone, performing tasks related to the collection of water samples, plankton and oceanographic data. She also participated in a campaign of the R/V Hespérides crossing the Atlantic from Montevideo to Madeira.

Ana obtained her B.Sc. and MSc. from Universidad de la República-Uruguay. She was awarded with a grant of the Program of Observation of the Global Ocean (POGO) to realize an internship in Canada in bio-optics and phytoplankton composition in a longline mussel farm.

The “Exploration of Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems of the Continental Margin and Abyssal Plain of Uruguay” will be a fantastic and enriching experience and she is enthusiastic to contribute excellent information with a great team.
