Bch. Agustín Loureiro, is a scientific advisor at the NGO “Mar Azul Uruguayo” where he leads the project “Dangerous or endangered”. He also works as a Scientific Observer for the Uruguayan National Directorate of Aquatic Resources. Since 2001, while studying biology at the University of the Republic of Uruguay, he has consistently ventured out to sea aboard fishing vessels and scientific research cruises. This has provided him with the opportunity to work in Uruguayan waters and the southern ocean, extending to the remote seas of Antarctica, Prince Edward Island and South Georgia, over the past 25 years.
Mr. Loureiro possesses extensive work experience within the area of interest, having served as Chief Scientist on a research campaign and as a Scientific Observer on multiple occasions. His direct observations of bottom longline fishing operations have enabled him to implement significant collecting efforts of benthic organisms. This experience underpins his primary understanding of the benthos and nekton distribution along the bathymetric gradient and the operational challenges of the area.
Recognized by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources with a position on the Observer Honour Board, he is also a member of the Uruguayan Albatross Task Force and collaborates honorarily with researchers from national governmental institutions. Agustín Loureiro completed his education at the Faculty of Science at the University of the Republic of Uruguay.
