Two articles were featured in the Fall 2022 edition of ECO Magazine: an introductory opinion piece written by SOI’s co-founder, Wendy Schmidt on ocean exploration (pg 9), and an editorial on R/V Falkor (too)’s refit co-written by SOI’s Executive Director, Dr. Jyotika Virmani, and Senior Director of Operations, Eric King (Pgs 31-33). Tonga Volcanic Eruption Reshaped Pacific Seafloor
A group of scientists from the UK and New Zealand, with support from the Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project, recently mapped the Hunga-Tonga Hunga-Ha’api seamount following the January 2022 eruption. Maps of the volcano created during SOI’s 2016 Ecosystem Dynamics of Hydrothermal Vent Communities expedition aided researchers in determining how the seafloor was altered by the eruption. Wendy Schmidt’s Deep Blue Wins 54th Barcelona Race
SOI’s co-founder, Wendy Schmidt, steered her sailboat, Deep Blue, and 11th Hour Racing team to victory at the 54th Barcolana Regatta off Trieste, Italy. She is the first woman and American to win the competition. October 2022.
