Stuart Piertney is Professor of Evolutionary Biology at the University of Aberdeen. He has over 25 years of experience using molecular genetic tools to explore aspects of the ecology, evolution and conservation of a broad taxonomic range of marine organisms. Professor Piertney’s focus on this cruise will be the hadal amphipods, asking questions about how the different species are phylogenetically related, the extent of dispersal and gene flow between locations, and the evolutionary adaptations to life in the deepest part of the oceans.Professor Piertney was awarded his BSc in marine biology in 1990 and his PhD researching population genetic structure in marine isopods in 1994, both from the University of Wales.  He was then awarded a NERC Advanced Postdoctoral Research Fellowship before taking up a Faculty position at Aberdeen.
