Paulo Sumida is a Professor of Biological Oceanography and former Dean of the Oceanographic Institute at the University of São Paulo, Brazil. His research focused on the ecology of benthic organisms in different deep-sea ecosystems, such as cold-water corals, polymetallic crusts, organic falls, and other reducing environments, with studies in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Southern Ocean. He has participated in 45 oceanographic cruises in vessels from Brazil, USA, Japan, China and Russia, and dived in numerous research submersibles, including Alvin, Johnson-Sea-Link, Shinkai 6500, Deep Rover, and Fendouzhe down to depths exceeding 6000 meters. He has also participated in eight scientific expeditions to Antarctica through both the U.S. and Brazil’s Antarctic Programs. He has been teaching several biological oceanography courses, such as Deep-Sea Ecology, Benthic System, Marine Invertebrates and Larval Ecology. He is/has supervising(ed) 15 Ph.D. students, 28 M.Sc. students, and over 70 undergraduate trainees.
