I am a marine ecologist specializing in fish biology and fisheries. My journey in the marine field began in my early teens when frequent trips to the beach fuelled a desire to learn more about the ocean and its creatures. Later on, I was inspired by Professors Peter Bacon and Indar Ramnarine, and Dr. Dawn Phillip – my mentors at UWI, St. Augustine, where I completed both a BSc and MPhil. in Zoology.Working for both government and non-government institutions, I have accrued over 20 years’ professional experience implementing projects aimed at biodiversity conservation and management. I have applied specialized laboratory techniques and field skills to natural resource management and have engaged extensively with marine resource users, particularly fishers and fishing communities. My most recent and current projects include invasive species management, marine spatial planning, coral reef ecology and fisheries, elasmobranch diversity and conservation, and small-scale fisheries in the blue economy. My passion project is SpeSeas, a local marine NGO, founded together with several other local marine scientists.I am extremely excited to be part of this first locally led deep-sea expedition in Trinidad and Tobago’s waters. One can often hear me proclaim “fishes rule” – something I truly believe. The morphological and physiological diversity that can be found among fishes – the largest vertebrate group on the planet – is often akin to science fiction, and I can’t wait to see what we discover in the deep wonders of Trinidad and Tobago.
