Pavel Doležal, Ph.D., is a Czech molecular parasitologist and group leader at the Department of Parasitology, BIOCEV, Faculty of Science, Charles University. His research explores how protein transport systems and mitochondria have evolved, particularly in relation to parasitism and the transition to anaerobic lifestyles. He has collaborated internationally with research teams in Australia and the United States. At Charles University, he leads projects investigating how mitochondrial functions adapt in parasitic protists such as Giardia intestinalis. His work has helped redefine our understanding of organelle evolution and the complex biology of early-diverging eukaryotes. As a member of the 2025 SPARC expedition off the coast of Uruguay, he will study protists inhabiting deep-sea environments, aiming to establish cell cultures for subsequent cell biological analyses.
