Ph.D. student Azul Gilabert is based at the Instituto Argentino de Oceanografía (IADO-CONICET-UNS), where she also completed her B.Sc. in Oceanography. Her work is embedded within national and international research initiatives focused on understanding oceanic processes in the Southwestern Atlantic.

Her research explores the role of microbial interactions in the marine carbon cycle, with a focus on how microbial communities contribute to carbon transformation and sequestration. By studying the structure and function of viruses, bacteria, and phytoplankton in dynamic oceanic regions, she aims to shed light on the processes that regulate biogeochemical cycles and influence marine food webs and climate feedback mechanisms. She has participated in several oceanographic expeditions, gaining experience in the collection and analysis of microbial and biogeochemical data.

Azul has been awarded fellowships by CONICET and has collaborated with international research groups studying planktonic dynamics and dissolved organic matter cycling. She holds a B.Sc. in Oceanography from the Universidad Nacional del Sur and is currently pursuing her Ph.D. at IADO-CONICET, under the supervision of Drs. Celeste López-Abbate, Fernando Unrein and Rubén J. Lara.
