Dr Fabiana Capitanio is marine biologist and professor at the Ecology, Genetic and Evolution Department at the Buenos Aires University (UBA) teaching Marine Ecology in graduate and postgraduate courses. She is a Senior Researcher at the National Scientific and Technical Research Council of Argentina (CONICET), where she leads PhD students and researchers.

She is interested in studying the biodiversity and ecology of zooplankton at the SW Atlantic Ocean evaluating species distribution patterns at coastal and oceanic areas and their life cycles. She is a specialist in the taxonomy of small pelagic tunicates. She collaborated in many studies related to the role of zooplankton in food webs as part of the diets of small pelagic fishes like anchovies and sardines.

Fabiana collaborated in Argentina on the development of management plans for new marine protected areas with the aim of conserving the biodiversity and health of the most oceanic and southern ecosystems, identifying key zooplankton species in food webs. She participated in numerous multidisciplinary scientific workshops with other national institutions, discussing the main risks and strengths of marine protected areas in our country.

As a member of the Falkor (too) expedition “A Tale of Two Submarine Canyons”, her research will explore how bottom morphology of canyon systems, current dynamics, and water mass properties affect zooplankton distribution patterns and their diversity.
