Melina Martinez is a Ph.D. student at the Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA), a CONICET (Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas, Argentina) doctoral fellow, and a teaching assistant at the Departamento de Ciencias de la Atmósfera y de los Océanos of UBA.
Her research focuses on the sea level variability associated with vertical changes in the density and its components, thermosteric and halosteric. She uses a combination of satellite altimetry, in situ observations collected by elephant seals, and numerical data. Currently, she studies the thermosteric component of the sea level in the mesoscale oceanic eddies and the physical process that describe this variability. She also has hands-on experience in drifters and mooring deployment, and is interested in the intersection between physical oceanography and climate studies.
Melina Martinez obtained her B.Sc. degree in Oceanography at the UBA, Argentina, and is currently pursuing her Ph.D. at the Centro de Investigación del Mar y la Atmósfera (CIMA) – UBA-CONICET. The Falkor (too) expedition, “A Tale of Two Submarine Canyons” will be her second research cruise, and she is excited to contribute to the scientific goals of the mission. She will supporting the acquisition, analysis, and interpretation of in situ oceanographic data.
