Ornella Silvestri is a PhD student in the Departmento de Ciencias de la Atmósfera y los Océanos at the Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA) and holds a PhD scholarship from Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET), conducting her research at the Servicio de Hidrografía Naval in Argentina. She has previously participated in six national and international research cruises, contributing to oceanographic, geological, and biological investigations.

Her work focuses on the interaction between bottom currents, water masses, and submarine canyons along the Argentine Continental Margin. She holds a degree in Oceanographic Sciences from the UBA, where she completed a thesis integrating oceanographic, geomorphological, and sedimentary data. With an interdisciplinary background in oceanography and marine geology, Ornella combines water column observations, seabed morphology, satellite images and sediment characteristics to understand canyon systems and oceanographic dynamics.

She is co-leading the ‘Tale of Two Canyons‘ expedition, where she will help coordinate and integrate scientific activities across disciplines and research groups. Ornella is committed to science communication, working to increase the visibility of women in science. She also advocates for ocean literacy, highlighting the ocean’s vital role in sustaining life on Earth and the importance of protecting it.
