Sebastián Horta is a PhD student in the Environmental Sciences program of the Faculty of Sciences (Universidad de la República, UdelaR). He holds a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from the Faculty of Sciences. He has also completed a Diploma in Management and Conservation of Natural Resources (DUMAC-UADY, Mexico). He developed teaching activity in the Faculty of Sciences and several courses on Ecology and the use of spatial tools applied to Environmental Planning and marine conservation in various tertiary training centers. He served as a Scientific onboard observer of the Fisheries Administration of Uruguay (DINARA), participating in numerous assessments of fishery resources and exploratory fisheries. He participated in several consultancies related to the development of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as a tool for natural resource assessment, ecosystem management and spatial planning. He worked as a National Consultant Expert in GIS applied to ecosystem management of fisheries for FAO and DINARA (2007-2014) and Deputy to the Technical Secretary in the Joint Technical Commission of the Maritime Front (2009-2014). Since 2014 he is working as a technical assistant in the Ministry of Environment as a specialist in Biodiversity and Conservation of the National System of Protected Areas (SNAP), where he also advises on marine and coastal issues, participates in the design of planning processes of the SNAP and the design of its marine component, in addition to representing it in different inter-institutional and international related technical groups. He is very excited to participate in this expedition and to be part of the scientific crew. The findings will be very useful to establish conservation strategies for these valuable and singular ecosystems.
