Aaron Micallef is a National Geographic Explorer and the  Principal Investigator of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute’s Seafloor Processes Lab, where his research centers on seafloor geomorphology, with a focus on developing and applying novel techniques to better understand submarine landscape evolution. Over the past 15 years, he has analyzed a diverse range of seafloor landforms, primarily those related to erosion and deposition in continental shelf and slope environments. His work explores the interactions between these landforms and tectonics, volcanism, sea-level changes, fluid flow systems, and human activities. Micallef has participated in more than 40 oceanographic expeditions across all oceans. His findings have been published in scientific journals, presented at international conferences, and shared with the public via newspaper articles, television interviews, podcasts, video animations, and websites. Micallef holds an MSc from the University of Oxford and a PhD from the National Oceanography Centre, University of Southampton (UK). He also serves as the chairperson of the International Association of Geomorphologists’ Working Group on Submarine Geomorphology and is a European Research Council grant laureate.
