Andrew Thurber is an Associate Professor at University of California, Santa Barbara.  His research seeks to understand how the ocean “works” and, in particular, how the processes of the deep and polar seas impact us all.  A main focus of his work is understanding how biology harnesses the potent greenhouse gas methane as a source of food, creating food webs based on chemicals rather than sunlight.  At the same time, and critically, this biological process keeps this gas out of the atmosphere and our planet a place where we can all live. A main focus of his work involves exploring Antarctica to discover habitats where methane leaks out of the seafloor to understand the drivers of biodiversity in Antarctica and the role this unique biodiversity plays within a functioning planet.
