Dakota Betz is an M.S. student and lab technician at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography – University of California, San Diego. Under the direction of Dr. Greg Rouse, our lab focuses on invertebrate diversity and taxonomy in the deep sea, particularly around whale falls, sea mounts, methane seeps, and hydrothermal vents. Dakota is currently working on a family of worms called Alvinellidae, tube-dwelling polychaetes, that live exclusively at hydrothermal vents. His research involves the intersection of phylogenetics, genomics, and morphology in assessing phylogenies with the erection of new species.

Being his first cruise, Dakota is excited to contribute to the exciting invertebrate diversity that we are bound to discover.
