Ivan Sunyé Puchol is a volcanologist and researcher at Sapienza University of Rome (Italy). His research focuses on reconstructing volcanic histories through the characterization of eruption deposits, including stratigraphy, geochronology, petrology, geochemistry and geological mapping. Previously, he did a Postdoc in Tephrochronology at the University of Oxford (UK). His expertise in tephra correlation through glass chemical fingerprint will help to decipher the southern Chile eruption records using volcanic ashes sampled by sea sediment coring during the research cruise.
Ivan has granted with a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship (ID: 101024337), and currently is working on the PÜSKÜRÜM project. He is member of the Commission on Tephrochronology (CoT), IAVCEI and the Italian Association of Volcanology.
Ivan received his B.Sc. in Geology from the University of Barcelona (Catalonia, Spain), and his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Earth Sciences at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He has done several internships: 1) at Labomar (Fortaleza, Brazil); 2) ISTerre (Grenoble, France); OSU (Corvallis, Oregon, USA). The “Fire and Ice” will be his first scientific cruise, and he is excited to contribute to the research of the volcanic and glacial interactions in southern Chile.
