Burns, J., Becker, K., Casagrande, D., Daniels, J., Roberts, P., Orenstein, E., et al. (2024). An in situ digital synthesis strategy for the discovery and description of ocean live. Science Advances, 10(3), doi: 10.1126/sciadv.adj4960

Revolutionary advancements in underwater imaging, robotics, and genomic sequencing have reshaped marine exploration. Burns et al. present and demonstrate an interdisciplinary approach that uses emerging quantitative imaging technologies, an innovative robotic encapsulation system with in situ RNA preservation, and next-generation genomic sequencing to gain comprehensive biological, biophysical, and genomic data from deep-sea organisms. This project involved the 2019 Designing the Future and 2021 Designing the Future 2 Expeditions.

Chen, C., Jamieson, J., and Tunnicliffe, V. (2024). Hydrothermal vent fauna of the Galapagos Rift: Updated Species List with New Records. Mar. Biodiversity, 54 (16), doi: 10.1007/s12526-024-01408-w. [This article was published open access with support from SOI].

During the Ultra Fine-Scale Seafloor Mapping Expedition, Jamieson and Tunnicliffe revisited several Galápagos vents, including recently confirmed high-temperature sites and inactive sulfide mounds. Their collecting efforts and observations led to an update of the faunal list to 92 species, including 15 new records restricted to obvious vent associates. Accurate regional faunal lists are important for understanding the biogeography of vent fauna, and this list will also be valuable for setting management strategies.
