Tyler served four years as an infantryman in the United States Army before earning his B.Sc. in Biology from the University of San Francisco. He spent three years as a research associate mapping distant-acting transcriptional enhancers in the Mammalian Functional Genomics Laboratory at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Currently, Tyler is a Ph.D. student in the Girguis Laboratory at Harvard University. He is interested in astrobiological questions regarding the limits of life on Earth, and the discovery of life on other worlds. In particular, the use of oxidation-reduction reactions as an agnostic tool to detect the presence of living organisms in extreme environments.
