Dr. Lam Nguyen-Ngoc began his university career at the National University of Ho Chi Minh City, receiving a B.Sc. in Biology in 1979 after the reunification of Viet Nam . He pursued graduate studies in Denmark, earning an M.Sc. in Marine Sciences from Aarhus University and a Ph.D. in Phycology from Copenhagen University. Lam has worked at the Institute of Oceanography since 1979 and has taken part in numerous plankton surveys and is an expert on tropical phytoplankton communities.  From 2003-2008, he participated in international cruises on the R/V “Bien Dong” by “NGHIEN CUU BIEN” as part of German-Vietnam Cooperation in Marine Science (VG Project); and on the “BRP Hydrographer Presbitero” in the PhilippinesVietnam Joint Oceanographic and Marine Scientific Research Expedition in the South China Sea (JOMSRE Project). Lam Nguyen-Ngoc was appointed a Senior Researcher and Full Professor in Hydrobiology at the Institute of Oceanography in 2011 and 2013, by the Vietnam Ministry of Education and Training.

Dr. Nguyen-Ngoc’s research expertise includes the biology, taxonomy and ecology of phytoplankton with an emphasis on dinoflagellates and Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs). He is a national expert on HABs and a well-known member of the international HABs community. Dr. Nguyen-Ngoc is currently Vice-Chair of the National Committee of Biology & Agriculture of the National Foundation for Science and Technology Development (NAFOSTED, MOST) and serves as a member of the State Council for Professorial Appointments of Viet Nam. Lam Nguyen-Ngoc is very friendly, likes to cook, and to prepare excellent Vietnamese cuisines.
