Sean is a Research Associate at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. His research mainly focuses on novel approaches to measure the stable isotopes of light hydrocarbons found in hydrothermal vent fluids. On this cruise, he will be responsible for coordination and implementation of vent fluid sampling and chemical analysis. We will deploy purpose-built fluid samples from the ROV ROPOS that maintain sampled fluids at seafloor pressures when recovered on-board the ship. We will use a variety of analytical equipment we set up on the RV Falkor to characterize dissolved gases such as hydrogen, methane, and hydrogen sulfide.
