Shellie Habel is a first year M.S. student in the Department of Geology and Geophysics in the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where she also received her B.S. in 2013. She works under Dr. Chip Fletcher as a member of the Coastal Geology Group, which conducts research in coastal hazards and shoreline evolution, and communicates with government agencies on issues involving coastal management.

Shellie is currently studying groundwater inundation expected to result from sea level rise and the predicted impact on urban coastal areas. She also studies sediment migration in Waikiki using field collected spot elevation survey data and spatial interpolation to construct DEMs to better understand change over time and inform resource management decisionmaking. Shellie is aboard the R/V Falkor as part of a graduate level advanced field mapping class whose participants will conduct gravity surveys and bathymetric mapping.
