Ryan Vandermeulen is a senior research scientist in the Ocean Ecology Laboratory at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. On this cruise, he will be measuring the biological activity of the microscopic components in seawater by monitoring changes in dissolved oxygen as a proxy for the production and consumption of organic matter, in addition to making measurements to determine how these components absorb and scatter light. Ryan’s research combines rigorous field and laboratory studies in conjunction with satellite remote sensing of ocean color in an effort to connect biological rate processes with changes in the optical properties of the water that can be detected from satellites. Ryan received his BS and MS from the University of Southern Mississippi, with a specialty in Biological Oceanography. Ryan has participated in 9 research cruise campaigns and has been known to periodically boost morale at sea with his guitar.
