Erica Herrera

Erica is a 3rd year PhD candidate and NSF-GRFP fellow in the MIT-WHOI Joint Program. Before coming to WHOI, she received her BS in Animal Science from New Mexico State University and studied both Chemistry and Mathematics at the University of Texas at El Paso. Advised by Colleen Hansel, her research interests are centered around the impacts of trace metal biogeochemistry on ocean health and understanding the roles of metals as micronutrients in organisms like corals and seaweeds. She is currently working towards developing techniques to supplement specific micronutrients to corals to aid in their resilience against the deleterious effects of climate change. On this cruise, she hopes to gain insight into the trace metal biogeochemistry of mesophotic corals that will inform her overall research on coral health.
