The Data Platform Manager will be responsible for managing, curating, and sharing the data, including QA/QC and the incorporation of visualization and other new and innovative methods for making SOI’s data publicly accessible. This includes building and maintaining web-based user interfaces to improve accessibility and visualization of the data and working with the global oceanographic and atmospheric data communities to allow for seamless integration and workflow.

The Data Platform Manager must have experience working with a cloud platform, will represent SOI in technical professional settings, and may, occasionally, spend time at sea. This position may require travel domestically and/or internationally.

Your Primary Responsibilities will include

  • Leading data storage and accessibility efforts, including managing and presenting SOI’s data archived in Google Cloud Storage
  • Developing new software systems or integrating existing commercial applications to achieve the scientific and outreach goals of the organization
  • Developing and maintaining end-user interfaces, GIS-integrations, and documentation
  • Conceptualizing, designing and implementing innovative products such as new ML and AI
  • Representing SOI at meetings and workshops in data processing, analysis, and storage, advanced data management techniques, marine science, and other relevant topics

Your Experience and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in a pertinent STEM field and/or a minimum of 5 years of related experience
  • Basic Knowledge of state-of-the-art appropriate data-related technologies and tools
  • Familiarity with visualization platforms and tools and/or expertise in development of new software systems
  • Creative thinking on how to handle Big Data and implement innovative tools
  • Prioritizing and managing multiple projects and competing priorities simultaneously
  • Effectively communicating complex technical concepts to various counterparts

It is preferred that you have

  • Proficiency in Google Cloud storage and tools and Google workspace applications
  • Familiarity with oceanographic/meteorological data, including end-to-end flow, QA/QC, and metadata
  • General knowledge of shipboard data processing, implementation of data standards, and related new innovative workflows
  • General knowledge of shipboard data logging, storage, hardware, networking, monitoring, acquisition and notification systems
  • An interest in and general knowledge of new and innovative visualization tools or immersive digital experiences that leverage the rapidly advancing field of information technology and visualization, including 3D/4D/VR/AR
