SPS Maritime Ltd operates the 110.6m research vessel FALKOR (too) for Schmidt Ocean Institute (SOI). SOI is a U.S. non-profit private operating foundation established in 2009 to advance oceanographic research. SOI brings together advanced science and state-of-the-art technology to achieve lasting results in ocean research, to catalyze open sharing of the information, and to communicate the resulting knowledge to audiences around the world. R/V FALKOR (too) – Hiring Job Information – Able Seafarer – Deck or Ordinary Seafarer

What we offer:

  • Position: Able Seafarer – Deck, “AB” or Ordinary Seafarer, “OS”.
  • Temporary Position with possibility of permanent position.

  • Rotation: Typically 2 months on/off. Paid Leave: 1 day of paid leave accrued per 1 day worked.

  • Accommodation: Twin berth cabin, typically in single occupancy, with ensuite bathroom.
  • Contract: Seafarers Employment Agreement as per Maritime Labor Convention.

  • Probation Period: 3 months.
  • Training: The Company provides training based on position, vessel requirements and other factors.

Job Description:

  • Report to the Bosun.
  • Form part of a navigational watch.
  • Assist with over-the-side operations (e.g. deployment/recovery of scientific equipment).
  • Operates ship’s offshore and deck cranes, overboarding systems and deck machinery.
  • Perform steel preparation with manual and power tools (needle-guns, grinders, etc.).
  • Paint interior and exterior of the ship (Jotun brand paint products).
  • Wash down of the upper decks and assist the Interior Department team with cleaning, as required.
  • Assist with and drive the ship’s workboat and rescue boat.
  • Assist in provisioning, taking stores and garbage management.
  • Other tasks, as directed by the Chief Officer, Bosun or Assistant Bosun.

General requirements for all crew:

  • Valid STCW95 Basic Safety Training
  • Valid Seafarers Medical Fitness Certificate (ENG1 or equivalent recognised by Cayman Islands)
  • Seafarer’s Discharge Book
  • Passport
  • Proficiency in Designated Security Duties
  • Good communication skills, including English language speaking and comprehension
  • Negative drug test result on first day of employment
  • Clean Criminal Record
  • Clean background check verified prior to employment

Specific requirements for this position:

  • Able Seafarer – Deck STCW II/5 (for AB applicants only)
  • STCW II/4 Rating forming Part of a Navigational Watch certificate

Desirable additional skills/qualifications:

  • Forklift and/or cherry picker experience
  • Carpentry skills/qualifications
  • Experience using a variety of welding equipment and procedures (e.g. TIG, MMA, etc.)
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents and drawings, plan layout of work and align components using calipers, rulers and clamp pieces etc.
